REDMOND, WA, December 8, 2021 Pattern Computer® Inc. (PCI) has improved their novel test for near real-time diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infections. The improved system can be calibrated to perform with 100% sensitivity (detection of positive samples), with a specificity of no less than 92% (detection of negative samples).
Conversely, the system also can be tuned to deliver higher balanced figures. According to the firm’s bio team:
“Our Covid-19 detection system can be calibrated to perform with 100% sensitivity (detection of positive samples), with a specificity of no less than 92% (detection of negative samples). This could be useful in high-risk situations like hospitals, airports, concert venues, etc… In comparison, when optimizing for balanced accuracy our system consistently performs at greater than 98.5% balanced accuracy, with both specificity and sensitivity ranging between 99.8% and 97.2%.”
The high throughput and high precision tests will be of critical value in high-risk and high-density environments such as hospitals, airports, concert venues, sporting events, train stations, government facilities, college campuses and more. The PCI system is self-contained, mobile, and multiple units can be rapidly deployed in minutes to any location. A new conveyor design promises to reduce testing time from 15 seconds to 3 seconds.
Given the new reality of the highly transmissible Omicron COVID-19 variant spreading across the globe, it is imperative that fast, accurate and reliable testing systems be deployed at points of entry and transit in as many counties as possible to contain this new variant.
The world has seen and experienced the Delta, and now, the Omicron variants. It is clear that increased testing will be needed for the foreseeable future at as many distributed locations as possible to curtail the spread of the original virus as well as the known and unknown future variants.
The most common and widely used PCR tests take at least 15 minutes to produce results, and require scarce reagents to process test results, whereas the PCI method and system enables high-volume throughput of tests without requiring chemical reagents, and can be used at remote locations such as: all building entrances, event venues, court houses, state and federal facilities, TSA screening areas, ports of entry and more.
“A simple, fast, easy to administer, high accuracy COVID-19 test will be critical to containing and controlling the spread of the multiple variants of COVID-19,” said Prof. J. Ben Brown (UC Berkeley & Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory).
Developed using the Pattern Discovery Engine&trade: (PDE), comprised of proprietary software methods and specially configured hardware, the improved results suggest this low-cost, high volume COVID-19 test could create new opportunities for reducing transmission risk in high-headcount, high-density entertainment venues.
“It is clear that high-volume, rapid and accurate detection will be a necessary complement to vaccination in every country, and at every major venue. The cost in lockdowns to countries in lost GDP, and to companies in lost productivity, is just too much; the world needs a way to go forward with our lives. We think we’ve found a way,” added Mark R. Anderson, CEO of Pattern Computer.
About Pattern Computer
Pattern Computer, Inc., a Seattle-area startup, uses its proprietary Pattern Discovery Engine to solve the most important and most intractable problems in business and medicine. Its proprietary mathematical techniques can find complex patterns in very-high-order data that have eluded detection by much larger systems.
While the company is currently applying its computational platform to the challenging field of drug discovery, it is also making pattern discoveries for partners in several other sectors, including additional biomedical research, materials science, aerospace manufacturing, veterinary medicine, air traffic operations, and finance.
